udgātṛ

chanter priest (udgātṛ)

The priest who chants the Saman. Named exactly once in the four Samhitas, and in a simile: at RV 2.43.2 a bird is told "udgāteva śakune sāma gāyasi", "thou like the chanter-priest chantest the Sama". The Rigveda's manual annotation confirms the form as udgātár-, nominative singular masculine. The office does not occur in the Samaveda, whose chant it exists to sing.
